Love is difficult to explain. We all know it and probably we suffer in explaining our feelings around love. Reading the following article from www.theschooloflife.com about ancient Greek vocabulary around love, I thought maybe the difficulty is simply because of trying to squeeze different (yes somehow similar yet still different) feelings into one nutshell of love. Here are the three words that might bring ease in expressing your feelings around love:
- EROS. This is described as ‘powerful physical feeling’. Sexual desire.
- PHILIA. Warm, loyal friendship we may say. Fondness.
- AGAPE. Brotherly love. Or ‘charitable love’ with description in the article.
- STORGE. Familial, natural love like deep feeling towards parents, children, pets.
We need all, and we need unity among all of them.

Aşağıda linkini verdiğim makaleyi okuyunca ve aşkın eski Yunan’da birden fazla kelime ile anlatıldığını öğrencince, problemin benzer de olsalar farklı duyguları minicik bir kaba sığdırmaya çalışmaktan kaynaklandığını düşünmeye başladım. Aşk etrafındaki duyguları daha kolay anlatmaya yardımcı olabilecek üç kelime şöyle:
- EROS. ‘Güçlü fiziksel duygu’. Cinsel istek
- PHILIA. Sıcak, sadık arkadaşlık diye anlatılabilir. Sevgi.
- AGAPE. Kardeşçe aşk. Veya makalede ifade edildiği şekliyle merhamet içeren aşk.3
- STORGE. Ebeveynlere, kendi çocuklarına, beraber yaşanan evcil hayvanlara karşı hissedilen doğal aşk.
